Two words commonly used to join
sentences are 'and' & 'but' . They have different purposes.
AND is used .....
...to join similar ideas. " Peter
likes eating and drinking." "He spent the
afternoonwriting an essay and
reviewing last week's lesson."
...to suggest that one idea is
chronologically sequential to another: "I got up at 7:00am and washed my face."
...to suggest that one idea is the
result of another: "The tornado hit the house and blew off the roof.." "The wind
broke the window, and the rain poured through."
...to suggest that one clause is
dependent upon another, conditionally (usually the first clause is an
imperative): "Study hard and
you will definitely pass the
test."
...to suggest a kind of "comment"
on the first clause: "My first paycheck was $1,000, and that made me very happy."
BUT is used...
...to suggest a contrast that is
unexpected in light of the first clause: "The clouds were very dark,
but it did not rain." "He bought an alarm
clock but still overslept."
...to connect two ideas with the
meaning of "with the exception of" : "He ate all the fruit but the apple."

of the sentence are the same do not repeat the subject of the second
