In this set
of materials the reading
passage concerns one of the greatest migrations in history and the
listening passage introduces an interesting fact about that migration.
The reading
passage describes the Polynesian
migrations. These began 4,000 years ago and covered a vast area of the
Pacific Ocean. The Polynesians used simple outrigger canoes to make
their long voyages. These were very simple canoes made of two logs and
a platform
joining them.
The
listening passage tells us that it
is possible the Polynesians actually made it all the way to South
America. This is amazing using only outrigger canoes. There is plant
evidence in Hawaii to support this. There were South American plants in
Hawaii before the Europeans came there and this suggests the Polynesian
made visits to South America and brought these plants back with them.
