Comparisons2: Differences 2

 Reflection: When we compare  differences, we don't always use comparative adjective phrases. Can you think of another way to compare differences?

Now look at some sample sentences comparing the pairs in the first row.
Golf is played with a club, but tennis is played with a racket.
Playing tennis in Japan can sometimes be expensive, but playing golf is always expensive.
Japan is an island, but the USA is not..
The USA spends 6% of its budget on the military, but Japan only spends 1%.
Tigers live in Asia, but lions live in Africa.
Lions generally live in wide open plains and grasslands, but tigers usually live in forests or jungle.
Plane crashes usually result in a high loss of life, but train crashes rarely do..
Trains have been around for almost two hundred years, but planes only for a century.
What do all of these sentences have in common?  

Can you think of any other words we could substitute for the word in all of the sentences above? 

A With your partner make a sentence for each of the pairs in the 2nd and 3rd rows of the table above.
B Choose one of the pairs in the table below. Tell your partner and they will make a comparative sentence. Do this 5 times each.

With your partner make up pairs for the two empty rows.

Now make a long plan and a short plan for the topic "When you graduate, would you rather work for a big company or a small company?"
E Now change plans with a partner. Read your partners plan. Are they following the format? If not tell them so.
In groups of 4 give your speeches to the group
G Now bring up soft recorder and record yourself making the speech.
H Playback the recording and listen to yourself . Are there any changes you would make? If you want to change your plan.
Now record yourself again. Save the file (call it sp14)
J Now change seats with a partner and listen to their speech. If you have any advice about speech structure or grammar mistakes or vocabulary mistakes, give it to them.

G Now make a long plan and a short plan for the topic "Some people like to go on vacation alone, others like to go with a friend or in a group. What about you?"
H Now change plans with a partner. Read your partners plan. Are they following the format? If not tell them so.
